Project 1
A Personal Space
In the first project, we are required to design an outdoor personal space which is intended for a specific user based on an in-depth study of the user's needs. And for this project, our target user is the elderly. The objective of this project is to develop the awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design and to develop the student's ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as to integrate poetry with the building.
At the beginning of this project, we paid a visit to the elderly home which is the Little Sister of the Poor in Cheras. In a group of 3, we observed closely and studied the basic living requirements of the elderly. We also interviewed some of the elderly there to know more about their basic needs, daily activities and desired lifestyle in an elderly home.
Project 2:
For the final project of this semester, we are required to design an elderly centre in Taman Kanagapuram, along the Old Klang Road, Selangor. The objectives of this project is to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design, to develop student's ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as integrate poetry with the building and lastly to emphasize on space planning of clusters typology.
Part I : SITE ANALYSIS
We first conducted a study of the site in Taman Kanagapuram. The tasks that have been carried out included measuring the site, interviewing the residents around, collection of climate data, tracking of pedestrian and vehicles entries, study on the history and background of the place. This is to help us to be more expressive and responsive to the contexts around while not destroying the original essence of the place. In our own tutorial group, we have produced site analysis board based on the information we have collected at the end of the site visit.
Part II : Elderly Care Centre
By using the information that we got from the site analysis,I've designed a elderly care centre based on the site perception/visceral that I have studied from the site.
At the end of this project, I have developed a deeper understanding about designing a space for specific users with specific needs. As for this project, our main users/clients are the elderly with many issues to be carefully considered. For example, health problem often faced by elderly, eyesight issues and also mobility issues. Their mental needs are also part of the factors to be concerned about the space design should be able to provide a private and intimate space for them while making them comfortable at the same time. Through this project, I have gained the ability to be more sensitive to the user's need besides considering the contextual and environmental factors that will contribute to the building design development as well. Site response like context and environmental response are fairly important too, the information gathered from the site visit helped me to visualised a more moderate design as the original nature of the site needs to be conserved. At the end of this project, I have gained very useful knowledge about the requirements and needs in designing a place for the elderly with special needs and care.
