Project 1:
The first assignment of the project aims to improve and enhance the understanding of principles of construction,sequence of construction activities,importance of basic detailing,construction joints and material application through real life projects.It also creates an opportunity to study the relationship between site and construction method.Through this project,basic principles and procedures through real life projects can be observed and understood better.This project also aims to train us in producing manual sketches,drawings and detailing related to construction.
In this assignment,in groups of 8,we had to select a maximum of 3 ongoing-construction site which visibly covers most of this module topics to study the process and procedures of construction.We have to identify the different building elements and show our knowledge and understanding in details through a report.While i get to do the superstructure part for this project,which are the columns and beams for building construction.
We have visited 2 sites which is a on-going construction school in Sri Gombak and another residence in Melaka.It was a fun and adventuruous trip and yet we get to learn more thing about construction through site visit.Through this project,i was able to understand and explain construction elements and its components especially about the building's foundation.
Project 2:
The second assignment is a continuation of the first project.This project allows the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of construction and application from prior project.Emphasis in producing related manual construction drawing for steel and /or timber detail and specification.This project also aims to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between technical knowledge and design.
This assignment is an integration with our Design Studio 2 final project,which means that we had to identify a few numbers of details for a selected element or part of the building that includes the roof,superstructure,joint and connection.We then had to produce an A2 presentation that include the detailed drawings and information based on the construction of our building to reflect our understanding towards the construction of our designs.
Through this assignment,i’ve learnt to select stable building materials and structural elements for my design project and also apply them on it.This project was an eye opener as it was clear that architecture is not just about design but also being able to make things work is very important.Thus,this assignment is very helpful in preparing us to face what will happen in the future as architects.
Reflection:
After going through this module,i’m now able to define the application of building components in real life for examples,infer relationship between buildings and sites,and also explain complete constructional procedures of the various components of building with suitable design and also compare structural elements according to materials used.I’ve gained my fundamentals on construction and have a clear understanding on how the procedures are on site.This module taught me to put theories into practical as well as work together as a group in completing a task.
